Swimming

Swimming at Alex caters for swimmers of all skill levels. Some students want to swim for the adrenalin rush of competition, the satisfaction of improving oneself or merely for the sake of being able to survive in an emergency situation that requires swimming.

We divide out swimmers into groups of similar skill level so that they are able to develop skill together.

The three training groups are:

·         Beginners

·         Intermediate

·         Squad

Beginners:

The beginners group consists of those who have either no swimming stills whatsoever or very basic skills. Their training consists the very basics needed for survival in an emergency situation:  getting their heads in the water and breathing technique; they are taught to float; they are equipped with the skills to get across the pool in the shallow end.

Once they have mastered these basics, we start introducing swimming styles such as freestyle and breaststroke. Only once they show that they are fully competent at this level do we allow them to progress to Intermediate level and the deep end of the pool.

We have had swimmers enter the Beginners group who manage to progress all the way through to Squad level. Students with determination and passion with progress well.

Intermediate:

These learners can manage quite adequately in the pool but they cannot go long distances without stopping. We build up their ability to do this and also improve their technique.  All four swimming styles are introduced.  There are about 15 intermediate swimmers.

Squad:

These swimmers are competent and can do a fair distance in the pool. They do distance training and hone their technique. There are about 15 squad swimmers.  They are required to be able to swim all 4 swimming styles skilfully. Some of them compete in the Midmar Mile and belong to private swimming academies.
