Alexandra High School has a long and proud history in the Pietermaritzburg Debating League. Our learners have won the Pietermaritzburg Grand Finals in all age groups and our speakers often rank in the city’s top 3. Alex debaters represented the province at a national level, at the South African National School’s Debating Championship.

Teams in each age group (Grade 8, Junior, Senior) face rival schools in the Pietermaritzburg Debating League such as Hilton College, Epworth, TWC, Maritzburg College and St Annes.

Debates are adjudicated objectively by teachers and independent adjudicators from schools that are a part of the league. Teams consist of three learners each and every speaker has a unique role to play in edging their team onward to victory.

Training takes place twice a week, as follows:

Monday        2:45pm to 4:30pm    – Grade 8

Wednesday   2pm to 5pm            – Juniors  &  Seniors

Friday           2pm to 3:30pm        – ALL TEAMS

Debates happen weekly during the season.
